Introduction to Tiny House building & Design - Educator: Kenton Zerbin

Over two and a half days, participants will learn the "nuts and bolts" of how to design and build their very own tiny house. Included in this course, we will discuss trailer options, floor plans, legalities and living systems. Students will be walked through the steps of construction, and learn many do's and dont's that will save them grief and money.

Learn how to make your custom tiny home have a responsible ecological footprint, save energy, lower your costs, and be totally tailored to YOUR dreams and needs. The workshop is geared to all skill levels, from custom builders to those who are just beginning their tiny home research journey. We will arm you with all the information you need to avoid pitfalls and get a smooth start!

This introductory workshop is a survey of all the main basics, including:

  • Pros and cons of tiny living
  • The types of tiny homes, and how to choose the right one for you
  • The basic “rules” of tiny homes, including sizes, lengths, and other limitations
  • Your dream floor plan and how to lay it out in scale
  • Technical topics like “The Big 5”, of orientation, thermal mass, insulation, glazing, and ventilation
  • How to plan your project like a master, and know what to do first, second, third…
  • Mechanical topics like heat, water, waste, and electricity
  • Construction basics, including framing, insulation, flooring, windows and doors, roofing, plumbing

Your instructor is Kenton Zerbin from Edmonton, AB, who is much in demand as a public speaker on the joint topics of permaculture and tiny homes. Kenton incorporates engaging visual presentations, supplementary videos, and hands-on activities. Students will learn step-by-step every aspect needed to design and build their dream small space!.

The two and a half day event will be held in Victoria on June 15 - 17 2018, at Roundhouse Farm in Victoria, and June 22 - 24 on either Salt Spring Island OR Duncan, in the Cowichan Valley. Location TBA.

Early Bird registration ($349) opens March 1 - 31. Regular price is $399.00.

Tiny House 1-week Hands-on Build - TEACHER: BEN GARRATT

A hands-on tiny house building workshop (tentatively booked for Salt Spring Island, B.C.) will get you familiar with all aspects of building so you can better understand the building cycle for your own tiny house. Geared to beginners but with enough work involved for builders to break a sweat, Ben Garratt will take you from learning safety with power tools to raising a roof in just one week!

Based in Vancouver B.C., Ben has built over 20 tiny homes and really really loves teaching hands-on build workshops. He's led them all over North America, New Zealand and Australia (where he hails from).

"We learn with our Heads, Heart and Hands and the students on each and every course have been inspiring change-makers from all over the world. Learning together how to live in community, communicate, practice permaculture, make life-long connections and build beautiful structures." - Ben Garratt

At the end of an incredible two-week build in Maple Ridge working on "Eclipse".

The 3 day weekend hands-on course was a blast. I found confidence in using power tools and learned more about tiny house design and building than 5 years of Youtube.

These two 1-day workshops aim to demystify the "guts" of your house - the systems that work behind the scenes to turn a simple shelter into a functional home. The components are available as an optional add-on to the tiny house build the previous week, or as stand-alone sessions, together or individually.

Day 1: Plumbing and Heating - (tentatively June 30, 2018)

This jam-packed day will start off with the basics of plumbing - materials, terminology, techniques and code - and move into a discussion of various methods of heating both air and water, and cooking. Armed with this new information, students will have the opportunity to practice their skills with a hands-on exercise: plumbing a mock kitchen! We'll end the day with a design session, including rainwater catchment/treatment systems, and much more.

Electrical and off-grid systems (tentatively July 1, 2018)

Participants will be taken through the essentials of electrical theory and house wiring, and shown basic wiring methods, before moving on to a hands-on activity to help you absorb the concepts presented and ensure proper technique. The afternoon will fly by with an in-depth discussion of various off-grid systems, including solar and wind-powered set-ups.
