Living systems: plumbing, heating and electrical
Educator: Ben garratt
These two 1-day workshops aim to demystify the "guts" of your house - the systems that work behind the scenes to turn a simple shelter into a functional home.
The components are available as an optional add-on to the tiny house build the previous week, or as stand-alone sessions, together or individually.
Day 1: Plumbing and Heating - June 30th
This jam-packed day begins with the basics of plumbing - materials, terminology, techniques and code - followed by a discussion of various methods of heating both air and water, and cooking. Armed with this new information, students will have the opportunity to practice their skills with a hands-on exercise: plumbing a mock kitchen! We'll end the day with a design session, including rainwater catchment/treatment systems, and much more.
Day 2: Electrical and off-grid systems - July 1st
In the morning, participants will be taken through the essentials of electrical theory and house wiring, and shown basic wiring methods before moving on to a hands-on activity to help you absorb the concepts presented and ensure proper technique. The afternoon will fly by with an in-depth discussion of various types of off-grid system, including solar and wind-powered set-ups.
